Natural hair care for hair that’s changing

Your hair doesn’t stay the same throughout your life. You may notice that it becomes finer, looks less full, feels drier or frizzes more easily. Your scalp may also become more sensitive. Grey hair can also change in texture and feel a bit stiffer, drier or duller than you’re used to.

That doesn’t mean you need to start a completely new or complicated hair care routine straight away. Often, good hair care actually begins with a few conscious choices: a mild shampoo, a conditioner suited to your hair type, and additional care products that your hair or scalp really needs.

On this page, you’ll find a carefully curated selection of natural hair care products, scalp care products, plant-based hair colourants and complete kits for changing hair. These haven’t been selected based on age, but on what you’re currently noticing about your hair and scalp.

Why does hair change over time?

The thickness, texture, bounce and natural colour of hair can change over time. Hair that used to be strong or easy to style, for example, may become finer or lose its bounce more quickly. Other people, on the other hand, find that their hair becomes drier, coarser or frizzier.

Your scalp may also react differently than it used to. A shampoo that you’ve enjoyed using for years may suddenly feel too harsh or too drying. That’s why it’s wise to consider not just your previous hair type, but above all the current needs of your hair and scalp.

Care for finer and thinning hair

Finer hair can lose its bounce more quickly and is easily weighed down by rich conditioners, oils and styling products. A light routine is therefore often more comfortable. Choose a mild shampoo and apply conditioner mainly to the lengths and ends.

Don’t automatically use a large amount of product. Start with a small amount and only add more when necessary. This will keep your hair looking lighter and prevent it from looking heavy or greasy shortly after washing.

As well as looking after your hair itself, you can also focus on your scalp. Our range includes mild shampoos, scalp tonics, serums and nourishing herbal products that are ideal for a mindful routine for fine or thinning hair.

What does dry or coarse hair need?

Hair that becomes drier often feels less supple and is more prone to frizz or tangling. A shampoo that is too harsh can make this worse. You should therefore opt for a mild shampoo and use a suitable conditioner after washing.

If your hair needs extra care, you can supplement your routine with a hair mask, leave-in conditioner or a small amount of hair oil. Apply richer products mainly where they’re needed: usually along the lengths and ends, and not directly at the roots.

Do you have fine and dry hair? If so, don’t automatically go for the richest products. A light conditioner or leave-in treatment may be enough to make your hair softer without weighing it down unnecessarily.

Gentle care for a sensitive scalp

A sensitive scalp may feel dry, tight or irritated. It may also react more sensitively to perfume, harsh cleansing ingredients or the use of too many different products at once.

So keep your routine simple. Start with a mild shampoo and only then, if necessary, add a serum, tonic or other scalp care product. By introducing products one at a time, you’ll be better able to work out what works best for your scalp.

Bear in mind that your scalp and the lengths of your hair may have different needs. For example, you could combine a mild shampoo for the scalp with a richer conditioner for dry lengths.

Keeping grey hair looking naturally beautiful and well-groomed

Of course, there’s no need to hide grey hair. A beautiful grey, silver or white hair colour can actually be very striking. However, grey hair can sometimes feel a bit drier, coarser or duller. With the right care, you can keep your hair soft, supple and shiny.

Choose a shampoo that suits both the colour and texture of your hair. If you have fine, grey hair, use a light-weight product. If, on the other hand, your hair is thick, dry or coarse, a richer conditioner or a regular hair mask might be a good idea.

For blonde, white and grey hair, there are also special products designed to keep the hair colour looking bright and well-cared-for. Always use these products in accordance with the instructions on the product page and adjust the frequency to suit your own hair.

Temporarily hiding grey roots

Don’t want to colour your whole head of hair or your roots straight away? In that case, you can temporarily cover up visible grey roots with hair mascara. Simply apply the product to the strands you want to touch up. The result is temporary and washes out when you wash your hair.

Hair mascara is handy between colour treatments, for a special occasion, or if you want to try out what it’s like to make your grey hairs less noticeable without dyeing them straight away.

Colouring grey hair and roots with plant-based hair dye

If you want a result that lasts longer than hair mascara, you could opt for plant-based hair colour. Plant-based hair colour consists of colouring plant powders that are mixed with water and applied to the hair.

Plant-based hair colour works differently from standard oxidative hair dye. The final colour is partly determined by your natural hair colour, the percentage of grey hair, the texture of your hair and any previous colour treatments. As a result, the same shade may turn out differently on different people.

Always read the product information carefully before colouring. If in doubt, we recommend colouring a small section first. This will allow you to assess the result before applying the product to your entire head of hair or the full length of your roots.

Are you new to natural hair colouring? If so, a complete kit might be just the thing. It means you’ll have all the essential products and accessories you need for your first colour treatment, all in one place.

A simple hair care routine that makes a difference

1. Start with a mild shampoo

Choose a shampoo based on your scalp and hair type. Do not use more than is necessary, and make sure to work the shampoo into your scalp. The lengths are usually rinsed out sufficiently during the rinsing process.

2. Look after the lengths and ends

Apply conditioner or a hair mask mainly to the lengths and ends. If you have fine hair, choose a light treatment and rinse the product out thoroughly. Dry or coarse hair can often benefit from a slightly richer treatment.

3. Only add what is necessary

A serum, toner, leave-in conditioner or hair oil can be a valuable addition, but you don’t need to use them all at once. Start with a simple basic routine and only expand it when your hair or scalp needs it.

4. Give new products a bit of time

Don’t judge a shampoo or conditioner based on just one wash. Use a new product several times and, ideally, don’t change your whole routine all at once. That way, you’ll get a clearer idea of what suits your hair.

Complete hair care sets

Do you find it difficult to combine individual products yourself? Our natural hair care sets bring together products that form a logical routine. That way, you don’t have to work out for yourself which shampoo, conditioner, scalp care product or hair colouring goes well together.

On this page, you’ll find, amongst other things, treatment programmes for sensitive scalps, colour retention and shine, thinning hair, plant-based colouring, and covering or touching up grey roots.

Frequently asked questions about changes to your hair

Do I need a special shampoo for ageing hair?

There isn’t a single shampoo that’s suitable for all types of hair. Pay particular attention to what you notice. Fine hair often needs light care, dry hair needs a bit more nourishment, and a sensitive scalp needs gentle cleansing.

Which products won’t weigh down fine hair?

Choose a light shampoo and conditioner, and use rich hair masks, oils and styling products in small amounts. Apply these products mainly to the lengths and ends of your hair, and avoid applying them unnecessarily close to the roots.

How do I look after hair that is both fine and dry?

Combine a gentle, light shampoo with a conditioner that you apply only to the lengths and ends. Start with a small amount of product. A light leave-in conditioner may be more comfortable than a heavy mask or a lot of hair oil.

Can I dye grey hair naturally?

Yes, herbal hair colour can also be used on grey hair. The result depends, amongst other things, on the colour chosen, your natural hair colour, the amount of grey hair and any previous treatments. If in doubt, always test a small strand first.

How can I hide just my grey roots?

For a temporary result, you can use hair mascara. If you want a longer-lasting result, you can simply touch up your roots with a suitable plant-based hair colour.

Can I combine products for different hair needs?

Yes. For example, a gentle shampoo for a sensitive scalp can be combined with a conditioner for dry or coarse hair. Consider the needs of your scalp, hair roots and ends separately.

Do I have to change my whole routine all at once?

No. Start with the product that best meets your main hair care need. For example, replace your shampoo or conditioner first, and only then add additional hair care products. This keeps your routine simple and makes it easier for you to work out what works for you.
